          Nowadays the convention is a giant monster compared to what it was 15 years ago, you must be prepared with anticipation, since the moment that the event ends you must start planning for next year’s convention. In the early years you would just walk up to the badge vendors and register for the following year without having to wait in line. In recent years, people would have to camp out on the sidewalk overnight in order to buy their badges the next day. Last year you had to make your badge purchase online, badges sold out in 2 hours. It seems as time goes on, the possibility of getting a badge gets lower and lower. So if you’re one of the “chosen ones” that gets to attend the SDCC, you have the privilege of getting into the pre-sale registration lobby for next year’s badge sale. Note:  If you can´t buy a badge during the pre-sale, you still have another shot during the general sale.

    Two or three years ago attendees were notified that you had to keep your badge in order to register for the following year, this implied you had to keep it safe like Gollum takes care of its precious. The back of each badge has a personal number which allows you to pre-register the badge and this would allow you to enter the pre-registration lobby online. This means each badge was unique and no one else could use your personal number.

                

          Once you are registered you have to keep all your info for several months until you finally pick up your badge on that one anticipated day of the SDCC. Before that glorious day, it’ll be impossible to stop thinking about how you’ll see and buy all those amazing things; all the movie news, video games, figures, statues, comics, cosplay, events, parties, tournaments, and so on… just call it Geek Heaven. If you’re any kind of geek, there is something for you at comic con. So as you arrive with high expectations about the event and all these fantastic things in mind, you come face to face with the worst enemy of every true fan… ¡¡¡LINES!!!  You will find lines for everything and I mean everything, below I’ll show you the different lines you’ll have to get in at SDCC:

1. Badge pick-up (it´s not a big line but is still a line): This is the fastest line of all (Thank God). I would like to highlight the excellent work of the people at the registration desks, they make the registration progress faster and accessible. Coincidentally, this is the place where you get your first freebie (bag/backpack with a program guide for the event which includes schedules and maps of the convention hall, an SDCC art book and a lanyard for your badge).

2. Access to the exhibitor’s hall: this is the first official line after you pick up your badge. You have to walk around ballroom 20 (one of the biggest rooms at the Convention center) and find the line that leads you to the exhibitor’s hall. In my opinion, this is the most frustrating line because you are very excited to get inside the SDCC and can´t wait any longer to get inside. You think of all the things you are missing, things you want to buy, fearing that they get sold out (the worst fear for me), if you are missing freebies (special edition freebies) and so on.  I recommend taking a little chair, the smallest one you find, because you will be standing there for several hours and you will get tired. Bring some munchies and make sure to eat breakfast. Most importantly, get there really early so you can have the privilege of being the first ones to get inside. ☺

3. Buying exclusive products: Once you get inside the exhibitor’s hall you must rush straight to the booth where you want to get your exclusive. You must have in mind when and where the items will be sold depending on when the manufacturer announced it. Most importantly, you must have the money you’ve set aside for the exclusive, (it can be posters, figures, replicas, comics, shirts or accessories). There are different ways of getting exclusives, for some you just have to jump in a line, for others you have to be at the right place at the right time since some exclusives are very limited. Some companies form lines to give you a ticket with a list of their products and a specific time to come back and form another line and allow you to purchase an exclusive. Others hold raffles. If you get picked, you are able to buy their products. Other companies make you buy a very expensive exclusive to give you the right to buy another more expensive exclusive.

          Basically, there are lines, lines and more lines to fork over your money to the big companies. The bad thing is, sometimes getting in that line dose not ensure that you are going to be able to get the exclusive (for 2 years in a row I’ve spent several hours queued up in an attempt to get the Mattel Monster High exclusives and have had no luck). If you want to get an exclusive you must endure the lines because exclusives are limited per day and per year. If you don’t get there early enough, they could be sold out for the day and you’ll have to try your luck the next day. If you aren’t able to buy the exclusive that year, then you’re out of luck and may have to pay a premium to buy it second hand from a vendor.

          If you like buying exclusives, I’d recommend you buy the 4 day badge with preview night. Knowing the product you want to get, the place or booth where they sell and also the selling time is very important prior to the con. Using the preview night or even the first day you attend the SDCC for exclusives is your best bet. Make sure to bring your savings or credit card… you are going to need it… trust me.

4.- Freebies: While you walk inside the exhibitor’s hall overjoyed, exclusives in hand, with a “Chesire” cat smile, you’ll want to see all the things the hall has to offer. While trying to enjoy the convention, don’t be surprised to experience being pushed, getting stepped on, bad smells, as many people have poor personal hygiene, and lines at every booth. All those lines are for freebies such as posters, pins, stickers, catalogs, cards, post cards, and other accessories promoting that company’s product they are featuring that year or it could be some new video game, a raffle, or activity. These freebie lines are long but advance quickly. It’s very important to know exactly what is being given away as you don’t want to wait hours in a line only to find out it’s not worth it. Maximizing your time spent enjoying the convention is crucial.

5.- restrooms:  This could be, by far, the worst of all lines depending on how bad you need to use the restroom. For god’s sake don’t wait until going to the restroom becomes an emergency. If you feel the need, just go because it’s not comfortable to wait until it’s too late and then you have rush to the restroom with an emergency just to find a line that wraps around the outside of the restroom. Check your priorities and needs. I sincerely doubt you would love to have an “accident” at the con…

6.- Events outside the convention:  While the exhibit hall is open, it’s a different world outside. There are events all around the convention center related to the con and as you can guess… more lines. There are video game lounges for Xbox, Nintendo, PlayStation and arcade games. There is also lots of publicity for new movies, exhibitions (several years ago they exhibited all the real life bat mobiles), fun houses and horror houses, and obstacle courses like the assassin’s creed experience. And if that’s not enough, when the convention center closes down, you can attend private parties. Some are free like the MTV fandom awards and some aren´t, like the playboy party. For all these events you have to stand in line, be there early and stand around for hours.

7.- Food: After getting up early in the morning, walking all day, and standing in lines, you’ll need to nourish yourself as these activities demand a lot of energy. You’ll need food to survive the con but if you want to eat something you must get in line. This means you’ll have to deal with the high prices of the food in the downtown area, which are even pricier during comic con season. Because of this, I strongly recommend bringing a lunch and some munchies from home like sandwiches, chips, cookies and others. Also, bring beverages, most importantly water, because they can be very expensive.

          You may think I´m a cheap bastard because I’m always focusing on ways to not spend money but it’s for a good reason. The true objective is to save money and use it on things like parking lots, transportation, and most importantly buying exclusives.  Do not limit yourself with your purchases.

          

          It may look like SDCC is a terrifying place filled with lines and more lines, but really it’s not that bad, it’s a unique experience where most of the things you see there are new and unique. Some are related to your childhood and will evoke feelings of nostalgia. There will be other things you’ll see that are related to what you’re into right know as an adult.  Every year is a unique experience despite the tiresome feeling you may get, the long lines, hunger and so on. It´s a privilege to attend. If you have the opportunity to be there and experience San Diego Comic Con, don´t think twice, you won’t regret it. I assure you, you will become addicted and be there every year, to laugh, to enjoy, be a kid again, be grateful for being an adult and most of all experience being part of this beautiful event.   ¡¡¡ENJOY!!! :D

Mi experiencia en la convención de cómics de San Diego.

                En la actualidad la convención es un gigante comparado con lo que fue hace mas de 15 años, debes de estar preparado con mucho tiempo de anticipación, desde el momento que termina el evento ya debes tener un tener un plan para poder asistir al del siguiente año.

En años pasados llegabas ese día y podías comprar tu entrada,  tenías la oportunidad de ir al registro a la hora que quisieras para comprar tu entrada para el año siguiente.  Años después tuvimos que acampar en la calle para poder registrarnos en la mañana del día siguiente. Después tenías comprarlo en línea para poder elegir los días que ibas a asistir y si no madrugabas para conectarte el día de la venta perdías tu oportunidad ya que en 2 horas se agotaban las entradas. Mientras más pasa el tiempo las posibilidades de adquirir tu entrada disminuyen ya que si eres uno de los afortunados que asististe al evento tienes oportunidad de adquirir tus entradas en el pre-registro y si no lo logras tienes una segunda oportunidad en la venta general.

Hace dos o tres años se notifico que al terminar el evento debes de guardar tu gafete o “badge” (placa) esto implica guardarlo como “Gollum” cuida su “precioso”,  nadie más que tu debe tener esa información ya que tiene un numero personal el cual te permitirá pre-registrar tu “badge” para poder acceder al pre-registro para comprar tu entrada para el siguiente año. 

Al estar registrado debes guardar tus datos para poder recoger tu badge el día del evento, ese día tan esperado y emocionante que solamente piensas en todas las cosas asombrosas que podrás ver y comprar; todos los avances de películas, video juegos, figuras, comics, cosplay, eventos, fiestas, concursos, torneos, en fin el cielo para los amantes de todo esto.  SI eres un “Geek” en comic con siempre hay algo para ti.  Así que al llegar ilusionado imaginando todas las cosas fantásticas que podrás disfrutar en comic con te encuentras con el peor enemigo de los verdaderos fans… Las Filas…

En el evento encontraras filas para todo lo digo literalmente aquí te muestro los tipos de filas que te encuentras en SDCC:

1.- Recoger tu badge (en realidad no haces tanta fila aquí): esta es la más rápida por fortuna.  Me encantaría resaltar el excelente trabajo de las personas que trabajan ya que hacen que el registro para recoger tu “badge” sea de los más rápido y placentero posible,  ahí es donde recibes tu primer “freebie” (bolsa/mochila con una guía de eventos donde viene los horarios y las actividades que puedes realizar, un libro edición especial con arte y un colguije o “lanyard” para cargar tu “badge”).

2.- Entrar al salón de exhibiciones: Esta es la primera fila oficial que realizas después de recoger tu badge, tienes que darle toda la vuelta al Ballroom 20 para poder encontrar la fila para entrar al salón de exhibiciones, en lo personal esta es la más desesperante ya que la emoción de entrar a Comic Con es demasiada y sientes que no puedes espera mas para estar ahí adentro, piensas todas las cosas que te estás perdiendo, las cosas que quieres comprar se pueden agotar(el peor de los miedos para mí), si te perderás algún freebie, etc.  Aquí se recomienda llevar alguna sillita pequeña para no estar parado desde temprano y algo para desayunar, así como llegar temprano para tener el privilegio de ser de los primeros en entrar. J

3.-Para comprar productos exclusivos: al entrar al salón de exhibiciones debes apresurarte directamente al puesto o “booth” donde quieras adquirir tu exclusiva favorita la cual con anterioridad, con meses, semanas o tal vez días de anticipación (depende de el momento en que las compañías muestren sus exclusivas de la convención) ya debes tener en mente cuales son las exclusivas que quieres adquirir y el dinero destinado para esa exclusiva (pueden ser poster, figuras, replicas, comics, camisetas o accesorio exclusivo de SDCC de ese año).  Hay diferentes formas de adquirir tus exclusivas, algunos solamente llegar a la fila; otros debes de estar en el momento preciso en el lugar indicado para que te toque cuando la fila comienza o cuando la abren (algunas las cierran porque hay demasiadas personas ya en la fila); algunas compañías deciden hacer una fila para entregarte un boleto o listado de los productos a adquirir, al tener eso debes hacer otra fila para que puedas comprar tu exclusiva;  algunos son a través de rifas, si sales sorteado tienes derecho a adquirir la exclusiva; otras compañías te hacen comprar una producto para darte derecho a poder comprar su exclusiva; filas, filas y mas filas para poder comprar, para darles tu dinero a las grandes compañías para adquirir un producto tan exclusivo que en ocasiones nunca tienes oportunidad de adquirirlo (dos años trate de comprar una muñeca exclusiva de Monster High y en los 5 días del evento nunca tuve la oportunidad de adquirirla).  Y todo esto lo debes de hacer ya que algunos productos se venden por día y si no llegas temprano a la fila debes de regresar al otro día temprano a intentar comprarlo, hay otras que se venden por todo el evento y ya no hay mas, pierdes tu oportunidad de comprar tu producto exclusivo que ya no venderán por que solamente era para el evento.   Si eres una persona que busca exclusivas te recomiendo comprar la entrada para todo el evento (miércoles preview night, jueves a domingo días normales) y que con anterioridad tengas bien identificado tu producto a adquirir y el lugar donde lo vas a comprar así como los horarios de venta; destinar el primer día que asistirás a SDCC solamente a comprar las exclusivas  y lo más importante ¡ahorra dinero! Lo necesitaras… confía en mí. 

4.- Para recibir “freebies”: Mientras caminas felizmente por el salón de exhibiciones con tus productos exclusivos que ya adquiriste y tu sonrisa de gato rizón, decides recorrer todo el lugar para disfrutar de la convención entre empujones, pisotones, malos olores ya que hay gente con poca higiene personal y te das cuenta que en todos los “booths” hay filas, al preguntar te das por enterado que son para ver la publicidad de películas nuevas, para poder jugar algún video juego antes que nadie, para realizar alguna actividad relacionada con tu programa de televisión favorito o para recibir cosas gratis, estos pueden ser: posters, prendedores, calcomanías, folletos, tarjetas postales, accesorios, etc. Todo de publicidad de cosas nuevas o de tus personajes favoritos.   Las compañías dan horarios para darte estos “freebies” o de repente abren la fila y si estas cerca te toca la suerte de recibir “freebies”.  Estas líneas son largas pero avanzan rápido, es de gran importancia saber qué es lo que están regalando por que en ocasiones no vale la pena el cansancio de estar parado esperando para recibir algo que no te gusta.  Por eso antes de hacer la fila acercarte y pregunta qué es lo que te están dando para ver si es más importante hacer esa fila o seguir tu camino por la convención.

5.- Para el baño: Esta fila puede llegar a ser la peor dependiendo de la necesidad que se te presente en ese momento, por favor no esperes a que sea demasiado tarde si sientes la necesidad de ir al baño ve en ese momento por que no es nada cómodo tener esa necesidad urgente y tener que hacer fila que en ocasiones esta hasta afuera del baño.   Revisa tus prioridades y necesidades dudo que te gustara tener un accidente…

6.- Eventos fuera de la convención: Mientras está abierto el salón de exhibiciones, fuera del centro de convenciones es otro mundo completamente diferente.  Hay otros evento relacionados con la convención y si como adivinaste… mas filas.  Puede haber “lounge” de video juegos (Xbox, Nintendo, PS4, arcadias) o de publicidad de las películas que saldrán en unos año; también exhibiciones (un año estuvieron todos los batimobil de Batman), casas de la risa o de espantos y también cursos de obstáculos (recientemente estuvo el de Assasin´s Creed).  Y al cerrar el centro de convenciones por lo general se hacen fiestas privadas exclusivas para los que tiene su entrada de la convención (MTV fandom awards) u otras que son aun más exclusivas y solamente pagando puedes entrar (playboy).  Claro que para todos estos eventos debes de hacer filas, llegar demasiado temprano y estar horas parado la mayor parte del tiempo.

7.- Para comer: Después de la madrugada, de caminar demasiado, de estar parado en las filas, necesitas alimentarte ya que es demasiada energía la que consumes para sobrevivir la convención.  Pero para comer también debes de hacer filas, aparte de que la comida es muy cara en downtown (centro de san diego) y por ser los días del evento es aun más cara. Esta es la razón por la cual recomiendo llevar comida en su mochila tal vez algún emparedado o varios, de preferencia comidas frías, llevar sus bebidas también ayuda por que en cualquier lugar donde quieras comprar una bebida saldrá cara.  Podrán pensar que soy un codo que no quiere gastar dinero pero recuerden que el objetivo de ayudar a ahorrar es que el dinero que lleves puedas destinarlo a otras cosas (estacionamientos, transporte o comprar las cosas que quieras de la convención ya que hay demasiadas) y no te limites en tus compras “geeks”.

Podría parecer que este evento es aterrador, que solamente son filas que todo es malo, pero en realidad no lo es, es una experiencia única, cada año es diferente la experiencia ya que la mayoría de las cosas que vez son nuevas y otras son cosas relacionadas con tu niñez y te trae nostalgia, o con tu juventud y las cosas que te gustan ahora como adulto ahí están para ti.  Cada año es una experiencia única y a pesar del cansancio, las filas, las malpasadas, es un privilegio poder asistir.  Si tienes la oportunidad de algún día asistir al mundialmente famoso San Diego Comic Con, no lo dudes dos veces, no te arrepentirás, vas a querer regresar año con año y disfrutar, reír, regresar a ser un niño, disfrutar ser adulto y sobre todo vivir la experiencia de ser parte de este hermoso evento.
