What I learned at Comic Con 2018 Part 2

What I Learned at Comic Con 2018 Part 2

This is part 2 of a 3 part series highlighting my experience at this year's San Diego Comic Convention. I'll briefly cover panels, exhibition hall and happenings from Thursday through Sunday.

Friday was good, still very crowded but panels were still very accessible.
My top three favorite panels for Friday were Voltron, World of Capcom and Mobile Film Making.

Spoilers ahead if you haven't finished the Voltron Netflix series!!!!

Voltron Legendary Defender Netflix Original series

Here are the revelations from this panel, keep in mind, I'm a bit behind in watching the series.

The castle is gone
Not sure when it happened but the castle was destroyed. Initially, I was a bit surprised the writers would blow up the castle but then I realized this plot device opens up new possibilities for different story lines. Without a home base, our heroes are forced to explore the galaxy which leads to more interesting episodes.

Shiro revelation
Guess what everyone? Shiro likes dudes! Pretty cool that Netflix was bold/progressive enough to have an LGBT character in their anime.

Last season of Voltron
Yup, you read that correctly. There are no immediate plans for a sequel or more seasons. This made me sad but I guess I would rather have 8 solid seasons than a whole bunch of seasons with filler episodes. Definitely prefer quality over quantity.

World of Capcom

This panel was structured as a rapid fire highlight reel for new Capcom releases. They moved quickly and there was a lot of information in a short period of time. I likely missed some info but I'll report on what I remembered most.

Mega Man, Okami, Street Fighter and Resident Evil 2 were covered among other games. Since I had already gone to the Mega Man panel earlier, I really didn't see anything new. See previous post for more info.

Okami for switch in HD
This was a cool surprise because I will eventually get a Switch and this is one game I never got a chance to play back in the day. Graphics were updated and looked beautiful. Can't wait to play it.

Street Fighter 30th anniversary
This collection of games included frame by frame animation, 12 different games, a music player and a redo of Street Fighter 2 Second Impact in widescreen mode. The Street Fighter 30th anniversary edition impressed me but I was more interested in somehow acquiring an arcade cabinet to play it on to get the full experience.

Resident Evil 2, not just a remake
I never played Resident Evil outside of an arcade game so I wasn't too familiar with it but by the crowd response, this seemed like a fan favorite. I would give it a shot if I were you.

It seems to me that Capcom is really counting on our nostalgia in order to keep them afloat. Perhaps their goal was to only announce re-releases of these games and keep other games under wraps for now. We'll see what happens.

Mobile Film Making

This was a fun panel despite it being very casual. There was good energy in the room and a lot of audience participation. The best part of the panel was people sharing their experiences about mobile film making, including their difficulties and successes.

Things I learned were:
1. Get out there and film
2. Tell a story
3. It doesn't take much to make your own movie

The first one really made an impression on me. You really just need to get out there and film. Practice makes perfect. Also, you always have to keep in mind that you're a storyteller first. And most importantly, don't be a slave to the technology because it doesn't take much to make your own movie.
